During this prolonged lockdown period, we know it can be difficult to keep your child’s basketball interest-level and skills high. I’ve included some ideas, links and instruction below for different skill focus. Any questions, feel free to contact me.
Areas of Focus
-
Dribbling
Dribbling is by far the most important skill the kids should be working on. They can do it in short periods throughout the day- 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there all add up. The key points are to keep the eyes looking ahead, knees bent, fingers, not the palms, on the ball, and keep the dribble low.
-
Shooting
Some people have access to basketball hoops and others not. The mechanics of shooting can be replicated and fine tuned without a hoop. Key points are to keep an “L” shape with shooting arm and knees bent. Shoulders, feet, elbow facing the basket. Order of actions: toes, knees, chest, arms then high wrists.
-
Footwork
It all begins with footwork. Whether it’s the correct foot positioning for a shot, the steps for a lay-up, jump-stopping or defensive movement, footwork is the building block for basketball success.
